Tell 'em what you do; not who you are!

One thing I always tell my clients (and my blog and web improvement students) is that it’s great to get your personal name and company name out there in the ethers of the Internet. However, always know that customers may not know your name or remember it when they have a situation (my term for “problem”).
First, get “what you do” out there because, let's say, when a person needs a car fixed, they will use search terms like: fix my car, car trouble, and engine overheating. They don’t use search terms like: Bob’s Garage, Joe’s Mechanics Plus, etc. because they don’t know your company exists, or many times if they do, they may not remember if it is Joe’s Garage, or Bob’s Garage and they may even search and select your competitor!
Secondly, get your name out there. For people to remember “Joe’s Garage”, this requires repeated “branding” over time, and if someone who is passing through and has car trouble, they will use what I call the “trouble” key search terms!
Thirdly, use both “trouble” and “problem” key word phrases and your name; but because people may not know or remember that you exist, put most of your money where the “trouble” is.

Here’s an example by Yours Truly:

You can search Ter Scott by using any search engine and even by placing “Ter Scott” in the address bar at the top of your Internet page and you’ll see that I’m “all over” the web and with different products and services. (Try doing the same with your name, or company name and see what happens; this is a good exercise to see if you exist).

But as I was mentioning earlier, unless people have seen me or heard of me, they aren’t doing this. After getting a contact from my office, or other advertising vehicle, they may search my name. That’s great because when they see me all over, this gives me added credibility (and the same with you and your name).

My situation is that I wasn’t getting (enough) hits from people searching for marketing consulting, graphic design, public speaking andtraining, or the imprinted promotional products. So, the lesson I share here with you is that you want to use “key word” rich terms in your blog titles, labels, and in the content of your blog post to draw these people using these search terms.

Here is an actual case where I posted a short blurb on my blog: http://newtonrep.blogspot.com/ about getting imprinted promotional pens from me in only 48 hours. When you go there you’ll see the title: Ter Scott in Duluth MN supplies IMPRINTED PENS for your organization in 48 hours. In the title I use my name, and location, plus I use the words: imprinted pens, and 48 hours. People who are searching for imprinted pen suppliers in Duluth MN (and at the very short run time of 48 hours) should be able to find this blog easily.

In a future blog post here, I may delve in a bit deeper as to how and why I used the image and had it linked to my website: www.myimprintrep.com so I can reap the orders.

HOW TO MAKE MONEY FROM YOUR BLOG: Use your blog to create interest and link it to your website where you will take the order.

I’ll let you know how my pen sales are!

Make it a great day!

Ter
